The sculpture “”The Toad”” (1990 ) is by Ejgil Westergaard and is located on Vintapperstræde . The sculpture is made of granite and is built like a pool carved in natural stone taken from Samsø Strait. The smiling and happy toad is encased in a centre stone flanked by a red stone setting with Stork, Mamma Stork and the couple’s young. The storks are also built into the body of stone with the stork young placed offset in relation to his parents with an uplifted beak.
The tale is based on a popular belief that a gemstone can be found in some toads’ heads, this symbolizes the eternal longing and desire to always move upwards. The aspiring dreams of experiencing the great world tragically end in the belly of the stork on his way to Egypt.
